Yesterday Movie Review

Yesterday, a movie portraying the life of Jack Malik and how he rose to fame, was directed by Danny Boyle and included some names such as Himesh Patel, Lily James, and Ed Sheeran. Yesterday is a movie about a struggling singer-songwriter whose dreams of fame are fading away. After getting hit by a bus during a mysterious blackout, Jack wakes up and realizes that there are somethings that have never existed, one of them being The Beatles. He then decides to perform these songs to a world that has never heard of them before, making him instantly rise to fame.

In my opinion the directing job by Danny Boyle was incredible. I really like the idea of the movie and I think that this may just be one of the most creative movie ideas out there. I think the addition of Ed Sheeran having a role helped the movie out a lot as well. Not only did he serve as a way to advertise the movie and get the name of the movie out there, but he also played a very important role. He played the role of a Ed Sheeran himself, portraying an extremely popular singer that helps Jack Malik on his way to fame and success. If they used a different singer, one not as famous, people may have not been as interested because it featured an extremely popular singer that helped his friend get to be the most popular singer on the planet.

As I watched this movie, I realized that there was a lot of cutting on action and other different forms of film that we have used in this class. I think that with every movie from now on I will look for these things. One specific time that I remember there being a lot of cutting on action was when Jack was trying to remember all of the words to the songs and he was going back and fourth, looking things up, moving quickly, writing on sticky notes and putting them up on the wall, etc.

A time in the movie that really stood out to me is when Jack went to meet Jon Lennon, a simple man that was still alive at 78 years old. When Jack and Jon were having a conversation, Jon mentioned "always tell the truth whenever possible". This changed the entire plot of the story because Jack realized that he cannot live a lie. He has to tell the truth to the world and let his fans know that he is really not this superstar song writer, but just a good singer who remembered all of the songs made by the Beatles.

After watching the entire movie, I find that the message that they are trying to say is "always tell the truth".  You don't need to make a lie to become rich and famous, and you probably don't want to live a lie either. We see in the movie that Jack has an extremely hard time, not just dealing with the thought of being extremely famous or working like crazy, but the fact that he is living a lie. I think everyone should look at how he felt, and put themselves in his shoes. Then people will see how hard it was to be Jack Malik at this particular time in his life.
