Sound Of Metal

Sound of Metal" studies grief, addiction and disability through unique storytelling

Sound Of Metal, directed by Darius Marder is a movie about a heavy-metal drummer, Ruben, that loses everything when he loses his hearing. His entire life has been made up of drumming, and although he is still able to drum, he is not able to hear the music playing. This was a very sad and emotional movie as Ruben expresses the mental pain he is feeling, acting like he has to start his entire life over.

Sound of Metal Ending, Explained | Movie Plot Synopsis

The genre of this movie is all about music and drama. The plot of this movie starts off with Ruben smashing the drums, but as time goes on, the drumming starts to fade away until there is nothing but a muffled sound. He meets with doctors and many other people to help him deal with his hearing loss, helping him learn sign language and getting used to living this new life. This is such a realistic movie that I almost thought it was a true story. It really felt like it was an entire learning experience for Ruben.

In 'Sound of Metal,' a groundbreaking portrait of deafness

Here we are seeing Mise en Scene. We see all the different props around Ruben, including his drums and drumsticks in his hands. The drums are also part of the set design, as it looks like Ruben is in some sort of recording studio or playing at a concert. We are also seeing the lighting as a big part of this set design as well, as it is shining exactly on Ruben. The colors in this scene are also very interesting. We see the yellow lights shining down on Ruben, and we also see some streaks of white and green lights around him. It also looks like he is in a pitch-black room or that there are just no other lights around him. This makes the scene more interesting instead of just having a fully lit room, as it really puts the focus on Ruben and his drums. Another thing about this scene is the sound frequency. It is really interesting to hear the sound go in and out, coming from Ruben's point of view.  There are many scenes like this one, where there are many things going on at once, which I really like about this movie.

Sound of Metal: A deeply affecting portrait of a drummer whose life is upturned with the loss of his hearing — Original Cin

Overall, I thought that this was a very interesting movie, but I love comedies or action movies, which are completely different than this movie. This movie is not my type of movie, so I probably would not recommend it. Although, if someone asked me about any sad or interesting movies though, I would definitely let them know about this one, as it is really interesting and you can really get a good feel of the emotions that were going through Ruben's mind. I almost felt like I was with him, wanting to do anything I could to get him through such a hard time.
As I watched this movie, and even now when I think about loud noises, I realize just how important my hearing really is. Not just my hearing, but my vision. And not just my hearing and vision, but eveypart of my body is extremely important to how I live. I now realize the importance of keeping a healthy body and will no longer take for granted what I have.
